OUR STORY

About guleum

guleum means “cloud” in Korean.

Clouds simply float in the sky, yet they gently change the way a landscape feels.
Quietly present, they make the air — and sometimes the heart — feel a little lighter.Like a cloud, guleum hopes to quietly stay close to your everyday moments.

guleum begins

In a small studio in Tokyo, we started making candles with the wish to deliver warmth and comfort through scent.

Move to Chicago

Our first life abroad was filled with new discoveries — unfamiliar streets, different cultures, and a completely new way of living. There were many joyful moments, but at that time, we were simply doing our best to adjust to a new environment. We did not yet have the space to return to candle making.

Move to Toronto

By our third year abroad, we slowly began to find more room to reflect on our everyday life. Living overseas taught us that many things we once thought were ordinary can feel completely different depending on the place and culture. At the same time, we realized that the way our hearts respond to the air, light, and scent of a changing season is something that can be shared beyond countries and languages. Even in an unfamiliar place, the scent and gentle light of candles helped us soften, breathe, and return to ourselves. Rediscovering the importance of those quiet moments became the reason we restarted guleum in Toronto.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

From playful forms to quiet seasonal scents.

guleum first began with decorative candles inspired by Korean candle craft — pieces made to be displayed, touched, and enjoyed as part of the interior. Their shapes, colors, and soft textures brought a quiet charm to everyday spaces.

Over time, through new places, changing seasons, and life abroad, our focus slowly shifted. We began to care not only about how a candle looks, but how it changes the air around us.

Today, guleum creates scent-led candles made to be lit, lived with, and remembered — quiet seasonal scents that bring a small pause to everyday life.

CANDLE CARE GUIDE

Candle Care Guide

A little care makes your candle burn beautifully.

Simple steps for a cleaner burn, a longer-lasting candle, and a safer experience.

A Little Care, A Better Burn

To ensure the best experience and safe use, please follow these candle care tips. Caring for your candle helps create a clean, even burn and keeps your fragrance lasting longer.

1.

Trim the Wick

Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). This helps reduce smoke and soot.

2.

Let It Melt Evenly

During the first burn, allow the wax to melt across the entire surface. This helps prevent tunneling.

3.

Burn for 3–4 Hours

Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Long burns can overheat the container and weaken the scent.

4.

Keep Away from Airflow

Place your candle away from drafts, fans, vents, and open windows. Airflow can cause flickering and uneven burning.

5.

Never Leave It Unattended

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish it before leaving the room.

6.

Keep Away from Children, Pets, and Flammable Objects

Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface and keep it away from anything flammable.

7.

Stop When 1 cm of Wax Remains

Stop using the candle when about 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom. The container may become extremely hot.

8.

Extinguish Gently

Use a wick dipper or snuffer to extinguish the flame. Avoid blowing it out to reduce smoke and protect the scent.

Treat your candle with care, and it will return the favor with a clean flame, a gentle scent, and a longer-lasting glow.
